A day after falling 3-1 at St. Norbert College, the Forester women's hockey team defeated the Green Knights by the same score on Saturday. Lake Forest freshman goaltender Jenna Brankin stopped 47 of 48 shots on goal to earn the victory.
Brankin's save total in the most by a Forester goalie this season and gives her a .946 save percentage on the season. She is also 6-3-0 with a 1.56 goals against average on the year.
The first two goals of the game were scored by Lake Forest freshman Marissa Weber, who was playing in just her fourth game after transferring to the College for the spring semester. Classmate Emily Wybo assisted on Weber's first career score two-and-a-half minutes into the contest and sophomore Sarah Gilbride set up the second with 3:11 to play in the opening period.
The Foresters out-shot the home team 21-15 in the first 20 minutes but St. Norbert had a 23-13 edge in that category in the second period. The Green Knights' only goal of the afternoon came on the power play at the 8:28 mark of the second stanza.
Lake Forest regained its two-goal advantage when senior Kim Herring converted a power play opportunity five minutes and 16 seconds into the third period. Wybo and junior Angie Chronis assisted on Herring's team-leading 13th goal of the year.
The Foresters put 20 shots on goal to the Knights' 10 in the final period and held on for the victory, raising their overall record to 11-6-1 and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association mark to 10-4-0. St. Norbert fell to 7-11-0 overall and 5-8-0 in the league.
Lake Forest will return home to face off against the College of St. Scholastica in two weeks. The annual Ry McCarthy Award will be presented at the first intermission of a 7:00 game on Saturday, February 4, and the teams will reconvene in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse to complete the series the following afternoon at 2:00.
