The Forester women's hockey team hosted and defeated St. Mary's University 3-0 on Saturday. Lake Forest senior Kim Herring scored two of the three goals and is now just one goal shy of the program's career record.
All of the scoring occurred in the second period. Herring's first of the game came just 87 seconds into the frame and gave the Foresters a 1-0 lead. She was assisted by freshmen Laura Reckdenwald and Emily Wybo. Senior Jessica Dare lit the lamp for the first time this year just 77 seconds later with sophomore Stephanie Slinde picking up the assist. Herring added a power play goal at 19:06. Wybo and junior Angie Chronis assisted on Herring's second score of the afternoon and season.
Lake Forest freshman goaltender Jenna Brankin stopped all 23 shots on goal she faced in the contest to earn her first career victory. She is the first netminder in team history to record a shutout over a varsity program in her collegiate debut.
The Cardinals out-shot the Foresters 14-9 in the opening period but Lake Forest had a 16-5 edge in shots on goal in the second and a 12-4 advantage in the third.
Herring's two goals give her 52 in her career, one shy of Courtney DeHoey's team record of 53. Herring's 86 career points also rank second in team history, trailing only DeHoey's 97.
The Foresters will begin Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play next weekend at UW-Superior. The teams will face off at 4:00 Friday afternoon and again Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
