Lake Forest Falls to Mount Marty on Day Two in Hawaii

Senior forward Hannah Hiland scored a season-high 20 points but the Forester women's basketball team was defeated 82-63 by Mount Marty College in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Friday.

Hiland shot 7-for-12 from the field and made all six of her free throw attempts. She also dished out a career-high five assists and added a pair of steals. Freshman forward Kara Schoenlein was next on the team with a career-high 10 points while sophomore guards Kelsey Burton and Jaianna Brooks chipped in with nine apiece. Burton led the Foresters with nine rebounds and eight assists.

The teams were separated by no more than four points in the opening period and Lake Forest led 15-14 when it ended. After shooting just 20 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes, the Lancers made 12 of 21 attempts, including six of nine from three-point range, in the second quarter. They outscored the Foresters 31-17 in the period and led 45-32 at halftime.

A three-pointer by Schoenlein at the 5:29 mark of the third pulled Lake Forest to within five at 50-45 but Mount Mary closed out the period on a 10-4 run to restore its double-figure advantage. The Foresters closed to within five again on a basket by Hiland with 4:12 to play in the game but scored just one more point the rest of the way while the Lancers made eight of 12 foul shots down the stretch.

Mount Mary outscored the Foresters 30-12 on three-pointers and 24-9 at the line. Lake Forest was also out-rebounded 46-38 but committed just a dozen turnovers while forcing 17.

The loss dropped the Foresters' record on the season to 4-7 while Mount Mary evened its mark at 7-7.

Lake Forest will resume Midwest Conference play at Beloit College on Wednesday, January 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
