Foresters Unable to Keep Up with Morningside in Hawaii

Despite a season-high 15 points from junior forward Molly Schoenlein, the Lake Forest College women's basketball team was defeated 99-61 by Morningside College at the Hoop N Surf Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Thursday.

Schoenlein shot an efficient 6-for-8 from the field and grabbed six rebounds in 17 minutes of action. She was joined in double figures in scoring by senior forward Hannah Hiland, who finished with 11 points, and fellow senior forward Hannah O'Day led the team with a dozen rebounds, including six at the offensive end of the court. Sophomore guard Kelsey Burton had a team-high five assists and Hiland led the squad with three steals and two blocked shots.

The Foresters shot 38.5 percent from the field but made just one of 10 attempts from three-point range and 10 of 22 free throws. The Mustangs were successful on 46.2 percent of their field goal attempts, knocked down 13 three-pointers, out-rebounded Lake Forest 49-43, and forced 26 turnovers while committing just 12.

Morningside closed out the opening period on a 22-6 run and led 33-13 after 10 minutes of play. Lake Forest shot 64.3 percent and scored 20 points in the second but, thanks in part to nine turnovers, was outscored by seven in the quarter and trailed 60-33 at halftime.

The Mustangs had a slight 16-15 edge in the third and then added 10 to their lead in the game's final 10 minutes.

The Foresters fell to 4-6 while Morningside improved to 11-3 on the season.

Lake Forest will take on Mount Marty College in the second of two games in Hawaii Friday at 11:00 a.m. (HT).
