Foresters Unable to Complete Their Comeback at Grinnell

Sophomore forward Molly Schoenlein led the Foresters with a dozen points in the Lake Forest College women's basketball team's 56-46 loss at Grinnell College Friday night.

Schoenlein shot 5-for-6 from the field in her highest scoring output in six weeks. Freshman guard Kelsey Burton was next on the team with 10 points and she added a game-high 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Senor guard Kelsey Schmitt led the visitors with four assists.

Neither team shot well from the floor with the Foresters connecting on just 31.6 percent of their field goal attempts and the Pioneers on 28.8 percent. Grinnell outscored Lake Forest 21-6 on three-pointers and 15-8 from the foul line and finished with a slight 43-42 advantage in rebounds and 16-18 edge in turnovers.

The opening period was close throughout with a two-point advantage for the Foresters being the largest lead of the quarter. The were seven lead changes in the game's first 10 minutes, which ended with Grinnell ahead 12-11.

Both teams led by as many as four points early in the second quarter and Lake Forest was ahead by two after a pair of free throws by junior guard Bridget Bilek with 3:56 in the clock. The Pioneers, however, scored the final 12 points of the period to take a 33-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Grinnell lead grew to as many as 19 points in the third quarter but a 7-0 run by Lake Forest to close out the period made the score 47-35 going into the final 10 minutes.

The Foresters trailed 51-40 before baskets by Burton, freshman guard Jaianna Brooks, and junior forward Hannah O'Day made it a five-point game with 1:22 to play. The visitors did not score again, however, and the Pioneers eventually prevailed by 10.

Lake Forest fell to 6-8 overall this season and 4-3 in Midwest Conference play while Grinnell improved to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in the league.

The Foresters will be back in action Saturday afternoon at Knox College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
