Foresters Fall to La Verne at D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas

The Lake Forest College women's basketball team was defeated 102-92 by the University of La Verne on Saturday in the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada. Forester sophomore guard Abby Wiedman matched her career-high with 18 points in just 17 minutes of play.

Wiedman shot 6-for-7 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. She also added three rebounds and a pair of steals. Senior forward Courtney Faulstick and freshman guard Michelle Ricolcol also reached double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively, senior guard Alex Messacar added nine, and junior Gina Ambrose and freshman Sam Cady chipped in with eight points apiece.

Faulstick led Lake Forest with seven rebounds and tied sophomore guard Jenna Rice with a team-high four assists.

The Foresters made exactly one-half of their field goal attempts and shot 70 percent (28-for-40) from the foul line. La Verne shot just 34 percent from the floor, made 15 three-pointers in 56 attempts, and connected on all 21 attempts from the line. Lake Forest had a 54-48 edge in rebounds but committed 37 turnovers to the Leopards' 24.

After the Foresters scored the first six points of the game, a pair of three-pointers by La Verne tied the score. Neither team led by more than four points during the final 17 minutes of the opening period, which ended with the Leopards ahead 47-44 after connecting on a three-pointer with 40 seconds on the clock.

La Verne led throughout the second half, but by just one (68-67) with 11:41 to play in the period. A 20-5 run extended the Leopards lead to a game-high 17 points (89-72) with 8:26 left. Lake Forest trimmed the deficit to seven with less than three minutes on the clock but would get no closer.

The Foresters are now 4-5 on the season while La Verne raised its record to 5-5. Lake Forest will take on Denison University tomorrow at noon (PDT).
