Foresters Hang on to Defeat Carroll

The Lake Forest College women's basketball team hosted and defeated Carroll University 61-57 Friday evening and is now 3-2 overall and 2-0 in Midwest Conference play. Forester junior guard Sam Schuring scored 13 of her team-high 15 points after halftime.

Schuring added two assists and four steals in the game. She has now led Lake Forest in scoring in four of five games this season.

Sophomore guard Gina Ambrose was the only other Forester in double figures with 10 points and she tied for team-high honors with eight rebounds, including seven in the first half. Junior forward Liz Radtke matched Ambrose's eight boards and added nine points and a career-high-tying five steals. Junior guard Alex Messacar and freshman guard Abby Weidman each shot 2-for-3 from three-point range and scored eight points.

Lake Forest shot just 37.1 percent from the field but held Carroll to 33.9 percent. The home team made seven of 18 three-pointers to the Pioneers' two in 16 attempts. The visitors had the edge in free throws, knocking down 17 of 24 while the Foresters made just eight of 12. The Pioneers pulled down one more rebounds (42-41) than Lake Forest but committed three more turnovers (27-24) than the home team.

The Foresters held the Pioneers scoreless for nearly five minutes to open the game and led 17-2 after 12 minutes of play. Carroll battled back and trailed by just four points (22-18) late in the opening period and 28-19 at halftime.

Lake Forest started the second half on a 10-2 run and later led by as many as 18 points. A jumper by Schuring with 3:29 remaining gave the Foresters a 61-43 lead but turned out to be their final points of the game. Carroll scored 14 the rest of the way but was unable to complete the comeback.

The Pioneers fell to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in league play.

The Foresters will host another conference game against Lawrence University tomorrow afternoon at 3:00.
