The Forester women's basketball team defeated host
Grinnell College 59-53 on Tuesday (January 5). Lake Forest is now
7-3 overall this season and undefeated in three Midwest Conference
games. The Pioneers fell to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Forester senior center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen
Park) scored a team-high 22 points and added eight rebounds, three
assists, and two blocked shots. It was her fourth 20-point
performance in the team's last five games. Senior guard Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) was next on the squad with 18
points and she led the visitors with nine rebounds. The two players
combined to shoot 18-for-26 from the field in the game. Senior
guard Kate Grunauer (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and junior guard Emily Weber (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seven Hills School) led the team with four
assists and steals, respectively.
Lake Forest shot 40 percent from the field, slightly higher than
Grinnell's 38 percent, but the Foresters made just two of 17
three-pointers and nine of 19 shots from three-point range. The
visitors also held a slight edge in rebounds (40-39) and forced 25
Pioneer turnovers while committing just 18.
Grinnell led most of the first half and by as many as five points
in the period. The Foresters closed with an 8-2 run, however, and
went in to the locker room at halftime ahead 26-25.
Lake Forest also outscored the Pioneers 13-3 during the first five
minutes of the second half to take a 39-28 advantage. Grinnell then
responded with a 17-5 run to briefly regain the lead with slightly
less than nine minutes to play. Six straight Forester points were
followed by five in a row for the home team, leaving the game tied
at 50 with 3:52 remaining. Lake Forest scored the game's next nine
points and held the Pioneers scoreless until a three-pointer at the
buzzer accounted for the game's final score.
The Foresters will continue Midwest Conference play at home on
Saturday (January 9) at 1:00 p.m. against Knox College. Visit the
