The Forester women's basketball team defeated Alverno College
92-58 Friday night (November 20) in the semifinals of the 2009
Forester Tip-Off Tournament. Both teams are now 1-1 on the
season.
Four Lake Forest players scored in double figures, led by junior
guard Emily Weber (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seven Hills School), who set a
new career-high with 18. She shot 6-for-8 from the field, including
a 4-for-5 performance from three-point range, and made two of three
free throws. Weber also led the team with five assists and three
steals. Senior center Lisa Nassin (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen
Park) was next on the squad with 17 points, senior guard Kate Grunauer (Chicago, Ill./Marist) had 12, and freshman Sam Schuring
(Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove) added 10. Sophomore forward Tatiana Moore (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) pulled down a game-high
seven rebounds and Grunauer matched Weber's three steals.
In addition to Weber's five assists, three other players on the
team had four and the Foresters set a program record with 30
assists in the contest.
Lake Forest shot a blistering 60.9 percent from the field and, just
three nights after failing to connect from beyond three-point
range, the Foresters made seven of 16 shots from beyond the arc.
The home team was also 7-for-13 from the foul line. Alverno shot
36.7 percent from the field, 2-for-10 on three-pointers, and
20-for-35 from the free throw line. The home team held a commanding
50-24 edge in rebounds but committed 32 of the game's 58
turnovers.
The game was tied at two, four, and six before the Foresters
rattled off 14 straight point to take the lead for good. Alverno
pulled to within three points (28-25) but the home team closed out
the opening period on a 15-4 run to take a 43-29 halftime lead.
Lake Forest opened the second half on a 13-4 run and gradually
extended the lead to as many as 35 points late in the game.
Loras College defeated Concordia University Wisconsin 79-65 in the
other semifinal so Lake Forest will host Loras in Saturday's
championship game at 3:00 p.m. Alverno and Concordia Wisconsin will
play in the consolation game at 1:00. Live video webcasts of all
