After posting runner-up finishes in Friday's mile and Saturday's 800, sophomore Yaneli Guajardo captured a title in the 3000 at the Midwest Conference Indoor Championship Meet.
Guajardo was the only runner at the meet to finish in the top two in three events and accounted for 26 of the Forester women's team's 42 points at the meet. Her victory in the 3000 was especially impressive given that the race started approximately 75 minutes after the completion of the 800. She broke her own program records in both events, completing the 800 in 2:18.48 and the 3000 in 10:46.99. Her day was not over, however, as she also led off for Lake Forest's 4x400 relay team that finished seventh with a team record with a time of 4:24.18.
The Foresters actually had a 1-2 finish in the 3000 with senior Emily Staufer finishing second in 10:49.24, more than nine seconds ahead of third place. Her time would have been the program record were it not for Guajardo.
Lake Forest also had a pair of runners place in the men's 3000, where senior Jorge Villanueva was fourth in 8:52.52 and junior Philip Wilson fifth in 8:57.84. Both were career-best times.
The distance medley was the first of two relays contested on Saturday and Forester sophomores Ellen Szostak and Audrey Paglia teamed with juniors Jacqueline Chapman and Estefania Ramirez for a seventh-place finish. Their school record time of 14:00.57 broke the previous mark by a little more than a second. Paglia, Chapman, and Ramirez also followed Guajardo on the program record-setting 4x400 relay performance.
On the men's side seniors Sam Barton and David Carrillo ran the first two legs of the distance medley relay and freshmen Mathieu Norcross and Christian Reyes the last two. They finished eighth with a time of 11:22.66. Norcross, Carrillo, Barton, and senior Christian Aldana were eighth in the 4x400 relay in 3:43.42, matching exactly their time from a week ago.
Despite competing in only the distance events, the Forester women tied for seventh place out of 10 teams and the men were ninth. They combined for 69 points at the meet, nearly twice the 35 they earned a year ago when both teams placed 10th.
Lake Forest's next meet will be Friday's Carthage College Final Qualifier, which will begin at 3:15 p.m.
