Lake Forest Falls in Dual Meet at Carthage

Senior Emily Bowens won both backstroke events but the Forester swimming and diving teams were defeated in their season opening dual meet at Carthage College on Saturday.

Bowens finished the 100-backstroke in 1:03.01 to edge out Lake Forest junior Brigit Dunne, who was the runner-up in 1:03.46. Bowens later completed the 200-backstroke in 2:15.33, six seconds ahead of another Forester junior, Toni Corbani.

Lake Forest junior Lily McCarthy also finished first in a pair of events. She won the first individual event of the meet, the 1000-freestyle, in 11:22.75, more than 11 seconds ahead of the runner-up from Carthage. McCarthy also touched the wall first in the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:31.15. He margin of victory in the 500 was just 1.58 seconds.

Senior James Haney made it a Forester sweep of the 1000-freestyle when he won the men's race by exactly half a second in 10:23.75. Lake Forest's other victory on the day was recorded in 1-meter diving by sophomore Heath Ogawa, who tallied a school record 521.30 points in his 11 dives.

Carthage defeated the Foresters 186-101 on the women's side and 182.5-88.5 in the men's team competition.

Lake Forest will travel to Carroll University next Saturday for another dual meet. The contest will begin at 1:00 p.m.
