Junior shortstop Jillian Rashid tied a program record with three doubles in the Lake Forest College softball team's 9-4 victory over Carthage College on Saturday. The Foresters also fell 11-4 to Linfield College, the eighth-ranked team in the nation, later in the day.
Rashid became the fourth player in the team's 39-year history to double three times in a game and the first since Tracy Rainey in April of 2009. Her two-bagger in the bottom of the second inning brought home senior rightfielder Sam Rosenfeld with the game's first run and she drove in a pair with another double in the third. Rashid reached second base safely again to lead off the fifth.
The Foresters broke the game open with seven runs in the third inning. Freshman first baseman Riley Frisbie led off the frame with a home run and Lake Forest quickly loaded the bases with no outs. Back-to-back RBI-singles by Rosenfeld and sophomore designated player Emma Carlson and Rashid's double made the score 6-0. A couple of errors by the Lady Reds brought two more runs in, extending the Forester lead to 8-0.
After Carthage cut the lead in half with a four-run fourth inning, Lake Forest closed out the scoring with a run-scoring single by sophomore leftfielder Abby King in the bottom of the fifth.
Forester freshman pitcher Missy Dieckman-Meyer tossed the first six innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out five. She improved to 3-2 on the season. Junior Jenny Carpenter retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the victory.
Frisbie, King, Rosenfeld, and sophomore second baseman Alyssa Grimm each had two of Lake Forest's season-high 13 hits in the contest.
The Foresters opened the scoring against Linfield with a homer by Frisbee in the first inning. It was her team-high-tying third round-tripper of the year.
A grand slam in the bottom of the second gave the Wildcats the lead. Lake Forest got one run back on a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Sydney Wyatt in the top of the fourth inning but Linfield responded with four more runs in the bottom of the frame.
King singled in a pair of runs in the fifth and now leads the team with 11 RBI on the season.
The Wildcats tacked on three more insurance runs in the sixth and turned a double play in the seventh to end the game.
Lake Forest will return home from The Spring Games in Leesburg, Florida, with a 5-7 record. Carthage fell to 2-3 on the year while Linfield improved to 14-2.
The Foresters are scheduled to play their home opener against the University of Wisconsin0Stout next Saturday. The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m.
