Jessi Werner Named MWC Pitcher of the Week

Lake Forest College softball player Jessi Werner was named Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday after going 3-1 with a 1.33 earned run average in six appearances last week.

Werner, a senior, suffered her only loss of the week during a doubleheader at Piedmont College on Tuesday. She struck out five batters and allowed just three earned runs in the 6-1 defeat.

The Foresters won three of five games, including both of Werner's starts, at the prestigious National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Leadoff Classic over the weekend. She appeared in all five contests and went 3-0 with a 0.69 ERA with 26 strikeouts and just two walks in 20.1 innings of work. Opponents batted just .176 against her in the five games combined.

Werner's highest strikeout total on the week was 10 in 6.1 innings against Methodist University. It was the 14th double-digit strikeout performance of her career. With 31 punchouts so far this season, her team record career total has risen to 451, which is 188 more than the program's second-highest tally.

MWC Performers of the Week are selected by the league's director of media and information. Werner also earned the award twice each of the last two seasons and once as a freshman.
