Lake Forest College softball player Jessi Werner was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday after tossing a pair of shutouts at the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament last weekend.

Werner, a sophomore, pitched all five innings in the Foresters' 8-0 victory over visiting Lawrence University on Friday in the team's first game of the double-elimination tournament. She allowed just one base hit while striking out six batters and walking two in the contest. Lake Forest defeated St. Norbert College 4-1 later Friday afternoon to advance to the championship game.

The Foresters blanked St. Norbert 3-0 on Saturday to capture the seventh conference title in program history. Werner surrendered just two hits and struck out 10 batters while walking two in her third consecutive shutout.

Werner is now 13-6 on the year, matching the third-highest single-season victory total in team history. Her six shutouts and 128 strikeouts rank second in program history and, despite having not yet completed her sophomore season, her career numbers rank among the top 10 in school history in nearly every statistical category.

Forester Athletes of the Week are selected by the Athletic Department on Thursdays. It was Werner's third such award this season and she also earned the honor once as a freshman.
