Softball player Jessi Werner was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday after helping her team begin the Midwest Conference season with a pair of victories at Cornell College on Saturday.
Werner, a freshman pitcher, allowed just a run on four hits in the doubleheader opener, a 3-1 Forester victory. It was her fourth complete game of the season.
Lake Forest erased a 5-0 deficit and won game two 6-5. Werner entered the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with the visitors trailing 5-4. After walking the first batter she faced, whe retired the next nine in order. The Foresters plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and Werner earned her second victory of the day.
Werner also allowed just two earned runs in a 4-2 non-conference loss to the University of Chicago last Thursday. She was 2-1 with a 1.24 earned run average for the week and opposing hitters batted just .190 against her.
Forester Athletes of the Week are selected by the Athletic Department on Thursdays. Werner was also named MWC Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
