Foresters Split Pair of Pitching Duels at Chicago

The Lake Forest College softball team fell 3-2 in the opener of a doubleheader at the University of Chicago on Monday before edging out the Maroons 1-0 in game two. Forester junior Kelly Chesnut tossed her third career shutout in the nightcap.

Chesnut surrendered just four base hits and struck out five batters without issuing a walk. She retired the first eight batters she faced before a two-out double in the third inning. Chicago also had a one-out double in the fourth, a two-out single in the fifth, and a base hit to lead off the sixth. She is now 2-3 with a 2.92 earned run average on the season.

The only run of the contest was scored in the top of the sixth inning on a home run to left field by Forester sophomore center fielder Nora Logue. It was Logue's second homer of the year and she had both of the visitors' base hits in the contest.

A pair of home runs were among Lake Forest's three base hits in the opener. After the Foresters fell behind 3-0, sophomore shortstop Sam Ritsema belted her second round-tripper of the season to lead off the fifth inning and senior catcher Danielle Gore added her first of the season to start the seventh but the Foresters could not complete the comeback.

Junior Molly Thomsen scattered nine base hits and a walk in her fourth complete game of the season. She fell to 3-3 with a 2.08 ERA.

The Foresters are now 5-9 on the year while Chicago raised its record to 10-4.

Lake Forest will play at Carthage College on Saturday and at home against Robert Morris University on Sunday. Both doubleheaders will begin at 1:00 p.m.
