Foresters Finish Off 2018 at MWC Individual Tournaments

After starting the day by being named Midwest Conference Newcomer of the Year, Lake Forest College freshman Brett O'Brien teamed up with junior Scott Drier to finish second in Sunday's #2 doubles competition at the MWC Individual Tournaments.

O'Brien and Drier began the competition with an 8-3 victory over their counterparts from Illinois College in the quarterfinal round. An 8-1 rout of Cornell College's #2 tandem sent them to the championship, where they were knocked off 8-4 by Grinnell College. They finished the season 11-8 overall with victories in seven of nine matches against conference opponents.

Forester freshmen Brant Christensen and Louis Payne were also victorious in the quarterfinals, edging out the #3 doubles team from Cornell 8-5. Unfortunately an 8-3 loss to Lawrence in their next match prevented them from reaching the final.

Sophomore Nick Zazove, who claimed the title at #1 singles on Saturday, also played at the top spot in the doubles lineup with junior Matt Kacyn. They fell in a tiebreaker in the quarterfinal round and dropped an 8-6 decision in the bracket's consolation semifinals.

O'Brien's Newcomer of the Year award was presented in the morning to the league's champion at #2 singles. He finished his first season 19-8 in singles and 17-10 in doubles and his 36 overall victories ranks sixth in program history.

The 2018 Foresters, who placed second in the MWC Team Tournament on Friday, will not lose any players to graduation.
