Junior forward Gaston Aubert's sliding goal with just 1:57 to play gave the Forester men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over visiting Carroll University on Sunday.
The goal was set up by a long pass from beyond midfield by senior midfielder Osvaldo Lara Soria. The ball sailed over the Carroll defense and Aubert got to it first, took one touch while on his feet and another while sliding, and slipped it past the Pioneer goalkeeper. It was the team-high third goal overall this season and second game-winner for Aubert, who now has six game-winning goals in his career.
Lake Forest appeared to have control of the game after taking a 2-0 lead early in the second half. The home team's first goal was scored by sophomore forward Lucas Geib off passes from Lara Soria and senior forward John Cappuccitti at the 38:36 mark. It was the first score of the year for Geib. Senior midfielder Seton Trostle then gave the Foresters a two-goal advantage at 48:55. Cappuccitti also assisted on Trostle's second goal of the season.
Carroll took advantage of a penaly kick opportunity at the 54:11 mark to pull to within a score and the visitors tied the game at 72:38.
Lake Forest out-shot the Pioneers 7-5 in the first half and both teams had seven attempts in the final 45 minutes.
Forester freshman goalkeeper Jan Roessler made two saves in each half to earn his first career victory.
The victory evened Lake Forest's overall record on the season at 3-3-1 while Carroll fell to 2-5-1.
The Foresters will begin the Midwest Conference portion of their schedule in Iowa next weekend. The team will play at Cornell College Saturday afternoon at 3:30 and at Grinnell College on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
