Foresters Hold on for Victory at Grinnell to Open MWC Play

The Lake Forest College men's soccer team began defense of its Midwest Conference championship with a 1-0 victory at Grinnell College on Saturday. It was the second shutout of the season for Forester junior goalkeeper Ian Taylor.

Taylor needed just one save to even his record on the year at 2-2-0 and he improved his goals against average to 0.89.

The only goal of the contest was the team-high sixth of the season by senior Mahir Mameledzija and was scored with 8:11 remaining in the opening half. Mameledzija now has 59 goals in his career, just two shy of the school record held by 1972 graduate Bryan Porto.

Lake Forest out-shot the Pioneers 4-0 in the first half and both teams attempted five shots in the second. Each team had a pair of corner kick opportunities in the contest.

The Foresters are now 3-4-0 overall on the season while Grinnell fell to 2-5-0. It was the league opener for both teams.

Lake Forest will be back in action at Cornell College Sunday afternoon at 1:30.
