Foresters Blank Grinnell 1-0 to Open MWC Play

The Lake Forest College men's soccer team defeated visiting Grinnell College 1-0 on Saturday in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams. The victory was the second straight shutout for Forester senior goalkeeper Ethan Guenther.

Guenther recorded six saves in the contest and has not allowed a goal in more than 232 minutes so far this season.

Lake Forest had the better of the play in the first half, outshooting the Pioneers 8-0 in the period. Grinnell attempted a dozen shots to the Foresters' three in the final 45 minutes. The home team had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks and committed 11 fouls to the Pioneers' six.

The only goal of the game was the team-high eighth of the season for Lake Forest junior Mahir Mameledzija, who maneuvered around three defenders in front of the goal before kicking the ball past the Grinnell goalie.

The Foresters are now 4-1-1 overall this season while the Pioneers fell to 1-3-1.

Lake Forest will continue conference play tomorrow when the team hosts Cornell College at 3:30 p.m.
