Andy Sweet, the "father of Lake Forest hockey," was the program's first head coach. He took over the club team in 1964 and was instrumental in its elevation from club to varsity status the following year. He also oversaw the team's move indoors to Alumni Memorial Field House in 1970 and coached the team until 1973, compiling a 91-68-1 record during his career.
He was inducted in to the Lake Forest College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.
From 1974 to 1989 the Lufay Anderson Sweet II Award was given to the player, selected by the coach, who without regard for personal recognition, best typified the spirit and dedication to the team effort which was so aptly demonstrated by coach Andy Sweet.
