The Lake Forest College men's hockey team began the 2022-23 season with a 5-5 tie at Saint Mary's University Friday night. The teams conducted a shootout at the end, which the Cardinals took 3-2.

Senior forward David Cohen scored a pair of goals in the game, including the Foresters first of the season at the 7:13 mark of the opening period. Freshman forward Justin Ross earned his first career point with an assist on the play. The Cardinals, however, tied the score with 3:25 to play in the period and the teams went into the locker rooms at the first intermission tied at one.

The home team took the lead twice in the second but Lake Forest finished the period leading 4-3. Junior forward Tyler Nielsen scored to tie the game at the 9:26 mark and Cohen's second of the evening knotted the score again with just 37 seconds on the clock. Forester senior forward Drew Shields struck just 26 seconds later to put the visitors on top. Ross earned his second assist of the night and sophomore defenseman Matteas Derraugh also helped set up Nielsen's score. Senior defenseman Scotty Nicholson assisted Shields at the end of the period.

Saint Mary's regained the lead with a pair of scores in the first half of period three but the Foresters drew even one final time at the 14:33 mark on the first career goal by freshman forward Colin Bella. He was assisted by sophomore Jared Gerger.

Lake Forest out-shot the home team 4-2 in the scoreless overtime period and 39-38 on the night.

Although it does not affect the teams' overall record, they participated in a shootout at the conclusion of the game and the Cardinal goaltender was able to stop one of the Foresters from scoring while his teammates were 3-for-3.

The same two teams will face off again at Saint Mary's Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
