The Lake Forest College men's hockey team defeated visiting Finlandia University 6-3 Friday night in the opener of their weekend series.

The Lions actually started the scoring with a power play goal three minutes into the contest.

The Foresters returned the favor with a power play score of their own at the 14:19 mark of the opening period. It was the first career goal for freshman defenseman Matteas Derraugh, who added a pair of assists to finish the night with a team-high three points.

Senior forward Cullen Kane put Lake Forest on top for good with another power play goal less than two minutes later and junior forward David Cohen struck at the 17:56 mark to make the score 3-1. Kane now has two goals on the young season while Cohen is tied for the team lead with three.

Both teams scored once in the second stanza, Finlandia at the 5:38 mark and the Foresters at 15:20. The home team's goal was the first for freshman defenseman Connor Sullivan.

The Lake Forest lead grew to three just 56 seconds into the third period and another tally at 4:26 made the score 6-2. The Foresters' first goal of the period was also the first of the season for senior forward Zach Leonard and the second came from fellow senior forward Josh Giacomin. Giacomin, who assisted Derraugh early in the contest, now has three goals and a team-high 10 points on the year.

Lake Forest sophomore forwards Tyler Nielsen and Shane Hathaway each recorded two assists on the evening.

Finlandia added a third goal with just 6.1 seconds on the clock.

Forester junior goaltender Nick Wiencek needed to make just 15 saves to earn the victory and improve to 3-2-0 this season. Lake Forest put at least 14 shots on goal in each period and 43 in the game.

The Foresters are now 4-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Finlandia fell to 1-10-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the league. The same two teams will face off again in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon at 1:00.
