Rough Opening Period Dooms Foresters against Aurora

The Lake Forest College men's hockey team dropped a 5-2 decision to Aurora University at home Saturday night.

The Spartans took control in the opening period, out-shooting the home team 22-9 and netting thre goals in the frame.

After a scoreless second, the visitors extended their lead to four with a power play tally at 1:42.

Lake Forest was able to cut the deficit in half with goals by sophomore forward Ben Perkins at 7:11 and senior forward Josh Giacomin at 16:51. Giacomin and freshman forward Jared Gerger set up Perkins' score and junior forward David Cohen assisted Giacomin.

The comeback bid ended when Aurora netted an empty net goal with 55.6 seconds on the clock.

The Foresters were outshot 49-25 on the night and Lake Forest junior goaltender Carson Poulin's 44 saves were just one shy of his career-high.

Lake Forest is now 3-3-1 overall this season and 1-2-1 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Aurora, the ninth-ranked team in the nation, remained perfect after eight games, including four in the league.

The Foresters will travel to New York to take on Manhattanville College Friday night at 7:00 and the following afternoon at 3:00.
