Thanks in large part to the squad's second six-goal period of the season, the Forester men's hockey team recorded a 7-0 victory at Lawrence University in Friday night's opener of the home-and-home series. Senior forward Mike Violette scored a goal and assisted on three others for his first career four-point game.
Violette earned an assist on the first goal of the contest, which was scored by freshman forward Jack Lewis at the 2:05 mark of the second period. The power play goal, Lewis' ninth score this season, was also set up by junior defenseman Anthony Martinez and was followed by five more Lake Forest tallies in the next 12 minutes.
Junior forward Luke Swardenski was the only Forester to light the lamp twice in the game. He converted a five-on-three opportunity to make the score 2-0 at 4:38 in the second period and his sixth goal of the year at 13:51 finished off the six-goal outburst. Junior defensemen Andrew Stein and Ben Certo assisted on Swardenski's first goal and the second was set up by Violette and junior forward Bobby Barrett.
Certo and Barrett also assisted on Violette's seventh goal of 2013-14 at the 6:07 mark of the second and Violette was credited with the assist on Stein's power play goal at 9:16. It was Stein's fifth score of the season.
Junior forward Jason McAloon made it 5-0 with 7:30 remaining in the second period. His sixth goal of the year was assisted by junior defenseman Charlie Stein.
McAloon earned the assist on the final goal of the night and first this season for Martinez, which was scored at the 16:14 mark of the third period.
Lake Forest outshot the Vikings 51-31 on the night and had a 23-7 advantage in shots on goal in the decisive second period.
Forester sophomore goaltender Leo Podolsky posted his second shutout of the season and improved to 9-1-1 on the year with a 2.23 goals against average and .922 save percentage.
Lake Forest is now 11-8-1 overall and 8-5-0 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play. Lawrence fell to 5-14-1 overall and 4-9-0 in the league. The same two teams will face off again in Lake Forest Saturday night at 7:00.
