The Forester men's hockey team defeated visiting Amherst College 3-1 Saturday night, thanks to a pair of third period goals. Lake Forest sophomore goaltender Leo Podolsky stopped 22 of 23 shots on goal on the night.
A dozen of Podolsky's saves were recorded in the decisive third period, which began with the score tied at one. It was his fifth consecutive victory and he raised his record on the season to 8-1-1.
Amherst scored the first goal of the night at the 5:19 mark of the opening period, which ended with the visitors ahead 1-0.
Lake Forest tied the score at the 14:57 mark of the second period on freshman forward Jimmy Cusan's first career goal. He was assisted by sophomore defenseman Will Seeber.
The official game-winning goal went to freshman forward Anthony Annunziato, who converted a power play opportunity two minutes and 23 seconds into the final period. His fourth goal of the year was set up by fellow freshman forward Jack Lewis. Lewis added an unassisted short-handed goal with 5:01 to play to help secure the victory. It was his second short-handed goal and eighth score overall this season.
The Foresters are now 10-8-1 while the Lord Jeffs fell to 9-6-1.
The annual Peter Taylor Award was presented to senior forward Chris Gard between the first and second periods. Gard is the 21st recipient of the award, joining a list that includes his brother Joel, the 2012 honoree.
Lake Forest will resume Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association play against Lawrence University next weekend. The Foresters and Vikings will face off in Appleton, Wisconsin, Friday night and in Lake Forest on Saturday. Both games will begin at 7:00 p.m.
