Ricky Schmidt Named Forester Athlete of the Week

Lake Forest College golfer Ricky Schmidt was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday for his performance in a pair of tournaments in the last seven days.

Last Thursday, Schmidt dominated the Elmhurst Fall Invitational, winning the event by four strokes with a 4-under par 68. The senior completed the back nine in just 31 shots, which included birdies on the 10th, 14th, and 15th holes and an eagle on the par-5 16th.

Schmidt is the third player in Lake Forest College men's golf history with a round of 68, joining alumni Ken La Plant and Bill Barnes, who posted their record scores in 1953 and 1970, respectively. The Foresters tied Loras College for the low round in the tournament with the Duhawks winning by the fifth player tiebreaker.

Lake Forest placed seventh at Millikin's Country Club Classic on Sunday and Monday and Schmidt finished second on the team and 10th out of 66 players overall. After carding a 76 in his opening round, he climbed nine spots in the standings with a 74 on day two.

Schmidt has finished the fall portion of the schedule with a tea-best average score of 75.11 in nine rounds of play.

Forester Athletes of the Week are selected by the Athletic Department on Thursdays. Schmidt also earned the award once as a freshman.
