Senior Durham Ghelfi fired a team-best round of 73 on Sunday at the Forester Spring Invite. Lake Forest's Team Black placed fourth Team Red was seventh out of a dozen squads in the event.
The event used a shotgun start and Ghelfi began with a birdie on the 501-yard, par-5 seventh hole. After a double-bogey on eight and a bogey on 14, he knocked down a birdie putt at the 569-yard, par-5 16th and was back at even par for his round after adding another birdie at hole number two, another par-5 measuring 554 yards. After a bogey at five, he finished with a par at six and his best 18-hole score since September of 2015.
While Ghelfi led the Foresters overall and tied for fourth in the field of 67 golfers, Team Black's top player was sophomore Jacob Krugman with a 75. He birdied all four of the par-5s, led all players at the event with six birdies overall, and finished tied-for-ninth. Junior Ricky Schmidt, who recorded 14 pars on the day, finished just a shot behind Krugman and tied-for-12th in the field. Junior Elijah Collins was next on the team and tied-for-21st overall with a round of 79 that included one of just two birdies on the day on the 363-yard, par-4 12th. Senior Davis DeKorte carded a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole and was Team Black's fourth scorer with a score of 80.
Junior Cam McGuire turned in the second-lowest round for Team Red with an 82. Classmate Parker Hill was a shot behind McGuire and one ahead of freshman Max Rohwedder.
Carthage College also fielded two teams and took the top two spots in the standings with four-man scores of 296 and 302. St. Norbert College was third at 308, two strokes better than Lake Forest Black. Lake Forest Red was behind Milwaukee School of Engineering and Wisconsin Lutheran College with a score of 322.
It was the Foresters' third event in as many days in advance of next weekend's Midwest Conference Championships. The three-day tournament will begin on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. and rounds on Friday and Saturday will start at 10:00 in the morning.
