Sophomore Ricky Schmidt is just one shot off the lead and the Lake Forest College men's golf team is in second place after day one of the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament.

Schmidt's round of 76 on Thursday is tied-for-second in the 35-player field and one stroke better than the 77 he posted on the same course at the Forester Spring Invitational on April 23. Five of his last six rounds have either led the Foresters or tied for the team lead.

Trailing Schmidt by just one shot and ranked tied-for-fourth overall is Lake Forest junior Davis DeKorte, who placed tied-for-fifth at last year's conference tournament. His 77 on Thursday improved his career scoring average at the event to 81.14.

Freshman Jacob Krugman is in third place on the team and tied-for-14th overall with an 83 on Thursday and junior Durham Ghelfi finished just a shot behind him at 84. Sophomores Elijah Collins and Parker Hill carded an 87 and 88, respectively.

Lake Forest's score of 320 on Thursday leaves the team nine shots behind leader St. Norbert College and six ahead of Illinois College and Monmouth College, who are tied-for-third. The event is being held on the 6,615-yard, par-72 course at Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford, Illinois.

Friday's round two will begin at 10:00 a.m., as will Saturday's final round.
