Sophomore Ricky Schmidt shot a career-best 73 in Friday's opening round at Knox College's Prairie Fire Classic and the Lake Forest College men's golf team finished fifth out of 16 teams in the two-day event.

Schmidt and Forester freshman Jacob Krugman were tied with two other players for third place and just two shots off the lead after 18 holes. Sophomore Parker Hill was next on the team with a 76 and junior Davis DeKorte rounded out Lake Forest's scorers with a round of 82. The team was in third place with a round of 306 going into Saturday's play.

Krugman carded a 75 on day two and tied for fourth place in the 100-player field with a score of 148. He also matched the fifth-lowest 36-hole score in team history. Schmidt's round of 79 on Saturday put him in a tie for 13th place with a score of 152. DeKorte matched Krugman with a 75 and, after going into round two in a tie for 44th place, moved up into a tie for 27th with a final score of 157. Hill completed the tournament in 162 shots and junior Durham Ghelfi in 164 with Ghelfi's 81 on Saturday counting toward the team's score of 310.

Illinois Central College won the event with a final score of 595 on the 6551-yard, par-72 Soangetaha Country Club course, 11 shots better than the University of St. Francis.
