The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced on Tuesday the 2017-18 NABC Honors Court, which includes Lake Forest College players Eric Porter and Danny Sotos.
The NABC Honors Court recognizing men's collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled in academics during the past season, noting the talents and gifts these men possess off the court and the hard work they exhibit in the classroom. In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:
- Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
- Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2017-18 academic year.
- Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
- Member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.
Porter, a senior guard and business major, was also a member of the Honors Court last year. On the basketball court he has been the team's leading scorer each of the last two seasons and connected for a program record 97 three-pointers in 2017-18. He was a team captain this season and, despite playing just three years after transferring to the College as a sophomore, surpassed 1,000 career points in February. Porter was named Second Team All-Midwest Conference after the season and recently added Academic All-MWC to his list of awards.
Sotos, a junior forward, is majoring in computer science. He has finished second on the team in scoring in each of his three seasons and led the squad in rebounding in 2017-18. Sotos has made 100 three-pointers, scored 957 points, and pulled down 375 rebounds in his career. He joined Porter and four other members of the team on the Academic All-MWC list earlier this month.
Porter and Sotos helped lead Lake Forest to a 17-9 overall record and a 13-5 mark in conference play this year. The team advanced to the four-team MWC Tournament for the third straight season, the program's longest such streak since joining the league in 1974. The 2017-18 Foresters also earned the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, which was announced last week.
