Foresters Edged Out at Cornell

Freshman guard Luke McDermott was one of four Lake Forest players to score in double figures but the Forester men's basketball team was defeated 65-63 at Cornell College Friday night.

McDermott's 11 points trailed only senior guard Mike Rueffer's 13 for the Foresters. Senior forward Jim Schick and sophomore forward Danny Sotos added 10 points apeice and Schick added 13 rebounds for his first double-double of the year. 

Ruefer shot 4-for-5 from three-point range but the rest of the team connected on just five of 24 attempts from beyond the arc. Lake Forest shot 36.4 percent fron the field whlie the Rams were at 42.9 percent. The Foresters out-rebounded the home team 42-33 but were outscored 15-8 from the free throw line and committed 13 turnovers to Cornell's 10.

Cornell led by as many as 11 points in the first half but by just two at 35-33 after 20 minutes of play.

The lead changed hands 10 times and neither team led by more than four points in the second half. The Rams took the lead for good on a pair of free throws with 5:13 remaining and did not allow a field goal by the Foresters the rest of the way.

Lake Forest is now 1-4 overall and 1-1 in Midwest Conference play this season. Cornell improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.

The Foresters will play another conference game at Grinnell College Saturday afternoon at 3:00.
