Cornell's Strong Finish Downs Foresters

The Lake Forest College men's basketball team was defeated 73-54 at Cornell College Friday night. Freshman forward Jim Schick led the Foresters with 13 points and seven rebounds.

It was Schick's third double-figure scoring performance of the season. Senior guard Jordan Gipson was next on the team with nine points and sophomore forward Torrey Davis added eight.

Lake Forest shot just 37 percent from the floor while the Rams knocked down 52.8 percent of their field goal attempts. The Foresters had a 34-23 advantage in rebounds but committed 14 turnovers to Cornell's six.

Cornell scored the first seven points of the game and never relinquished the lead. The Foresters trimmed the margin to three points late in the opening period but another 7-0 run by the home team made it a 10-point game. The Rams led 32-22 at halftime.

After surrendering the first four points of the second half, Lake Forest began to mount a comeback. A three-pointer by Schick cut the deficit to seven points with 16 minutes to play and another long-range jumper by senior guard James Stack made it a seven-point game again with 9:17 left. A layup by Schick at the 7:37 mark and a free throw by freshman guard Josh Irving 50 seconds later made the score 52-48. The Cornell lead was just four points again at 56-52 with 4:46 on the clock when the Rams rattled off 13 straight points to put the game out of reach.

The loss drops the Foresters' overall record to 3-9 and their Midwest Conference mark to 2-5. Cornell evened its overall record at 6-6 and improved to 3-4 in the league.

Lake Forest will host Lawrence University next Tuesday evening at 5:30.
