The Lake Forest College men's basketball team began the 2013-14 season with a 94-88 come-from-behind victory over visiting Dominican University Friday night. Sophomore forward Torrey Davis tied for team-high honors with 18 points and was one of five Foresters to score in double figures.
Davis doubled his previous career-high and added seven rebounds in the contest. He made six of 13 field goal attempts and shot 6-for-7 from the foul line while playing a team-high 30 minutes in the game.
Tying Davis for team-high scoring honors was junior forward Tyrone Staggers, who shot 8-for-13 from the field in his Forester debut. He also grabbed five rebounds.
Senior guard James Stack was next on the team with 17 points, all in the second half. He knocked down a pair of three-pointers and shot 9-for-9 from the foul line to help secure the victory.
Sophomore guard Austin Terry finished with 15 points and a career-high seven rebounds while junior forward Brian Madson scored 11 points and led all players in the game with nine boards.
Lake Forest finished the game at 53.3 percent from the field while Dominican was slightly better at 54.8. The Foresters, however, made 26 free throws to the Stars' 12 and out-rebounded the visitors 41-27.
Lake Forestled 7-5 early on before surrendering 12 straight points. The Dominican lead grew to as many as 15 points in the opening period and the visitors had a 48-40 advantage at halftime.
An 11-2 run by the Stars early in the second half gave them a 17-point lead and the deficit for the Foresters eventually reached 18 points at 68-50 with 11:40 to play. Lake Forest scored 13 of the game's next 15 points to trim the margin to seven but the difference was back to 11 at 81-70 with 5:07 remaining. Six different Foresters scored during the a 15-2 run over the next four minutes. A three-pointer by Stack with 2:36 to play pulled Lake Forest to within three and got the home crowd going. After a Dominican timeout and another stop by the Forester defense. Madson tied the score at 83 with a three-pointer of his own. Staggers was fouled and knocked down a pair of free throws the put the home team ahead with 1:02 on the cl ock and six free throws by Stack, two by Davis, and one by Terry in the final minute secured the victory.
Lake Forest will play its first road game of the season Monday night at the University of Chicago. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
