Handball player Dan Cordova was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday for his performance at last weekend's United States Handball Association Collegiate National Championships.
Cordova, a senior, captured his first Open Singles national championship on Sunday by posting a 21-15, 12-21, 11-3 victory over Martin Mulkerrins of University College Dublin. Mulkerrins had defeated Cordova in the final each of the last three seasons. Cordova also needed a tiebreaker in his 15-21, 21-8, 11-2 come-from-behind triumph in the semifinals after defeating his first three opponents in the tournament by a combined score of 126-53.
Cordova also posted a pair of victories to advance to the Open Doubles championship with senior C.J. Laffey. They were defeated 21-10, 21-15 in the final and denied a second straight title.
