Lake Forest Competes at IHA Doubles Tourney

Thirteen Forester doubles teams participated in the 2013 Illinois Handball Association Doubles Tournament over the weekend. Sophomore Eric Matiasek and freshman Dan Cordova were one of two Lake Forest tandems to reach the Men's Open quarterfinals.

Matiasek and Cordova won 21-19, 21-14 in the round of 16 before being eliminated by the eventual champions in the quarterfinals. Senior Isaac Acosta and sophomore C.J. Laffey also advanced to the quarterfinals after winning 21-6, 21-15 in their opening match.

Six of the nine women's doubles teams were made up of Lake Forest players. Senior Amalia DeSardi and junior Sammie Zender were the best among them, advancing to the semifinals before falling. Junior Lissette Cortez and sophomore Amanda Flaxman won 20-21, 21-19, 11-10 in the only match in the round of 16 before being knocked off by the eventual champions.

Senior Justin Novak and freshman Matthew Chu rattled off three straight victories, including a 21-8, 21-19 decision in the final, to win the Men's B Division. Sophomore Gracie Mullins and freshman Christi Valicenti prevailed twice to win the Women's B bracket. Junior Aimee Fadden and sophomore Amber Craghead were the Women's B runners-up. They defeated freshman Kaline Buur and sophomore Caitlin Shetterley in the semifinals.

Lake Forest's next tournament will be the United States Handball Association Collegiate Nationals at Arizona State University February 20-24.
