Acosta and Cordova Lead Foresters at IHA Men's Singles Tournament

The Lake Forest College handball team competed at the Illinois Handball Association Men's Singles Tournament in Des Plaines over the weekend. Forester senior Isaac Acosta and freshman Dan Cordova reached the Open Division's quarterfinal round.

Acosta won 21-3, 21-3 in the round of 32 and 21-8, 21-7 in the round of 16 before being knocked off by 2010 Lake Forest College graduate Suhn Lee in the quarterfinals. Cordova had an opening round bye and won 21-11, 21-15 in the round of 16. Senior Geoff Douglas and sophomore C.J. Laffey also posted a victory in the Open Division to reach the round of 16.

Sophomore Eric Matiasek and senior Derrick Contreras each won twice before meeting in the A Division final. Matiasek edged out Contreras 21-16, 21-18 to take the title.

Senior Clark Creasey also posted back-to-back victories to advance to the B Division semifinals and freshman Rick Arko prevailed once before falling in the semifinals of the C Division.

The IHA Women's Singles Tournament will be played at Lake Forest College next Saturday and the Circle City Tournament in Indianapolis will occur the following weekend.
