Lake Forest Hosts Annual I.H.A. Contenders

The Forester handball team hosted and competed in the 2011 Illinois Handball Association Contenders Tournament over the weekend. Lake Forest senior Riley Kloss was the event's runner-up.

Kloss entered the weekend as the tournament's #3 seed and recorded victories over Forester sophomore Sandy Ng (15-6, 15-6) and junior Derrick Contreras (7-15, 15-8, 11-3) to reach the semifinals, where he prevailed 21-20, 21-14. He then fell 21-16, 21-13 to Anthony Selestow in the championship match.

Contreras won 15-0, 15-2 in the opening round and 15-6, 15-0 in the round of 16 before falling to Kloss in the quarterfinals. Freshman Colton Laffey also advanced to the quarterfinals after a 15-1, 15-4 round of 16 triumph.

Ng, freshman Pete Jansen, and senior Dan Sterrett posted first-round victories before falling in the round of 16 and moving to the consolation bracket.

Sterrett posted four victories on his way to the consolation title, including a 15-6, 15-11 win over senior Maria Dugas in the semifinals and a 15-5, 15-4 triumph over junior Geoff Douglas in the final. Douglas used a 15-8, 15-8 semifinal victory over Jansen to reach the final. Jansen got to Douglas by defeating Ng 15-6, 12-15, 11-3 in the quarterfinals and Dugas reached the semifinals after defeating sophomore Samantha Zender 15-3, 15-1 in the first round. Ng also defeated a teammate - junior Amalia DeSardi - 15-2, 15-10 before falling to Jansen.

The next tournament on Lake Forest's schedule is the Milwaukee Classic, which will be played December 2-4 at the Wisconsin Athletic Club in West Allis, Wisconsin.
