Lee and Nahorniak Take Second in Doubles at Milwaukee Classic

Several players on the Lake Forest College handball team competed at the Milwaukee Classic over the weekend (December 4-6).

Senior Suhn Lee (Glenview, Ill.) and junior Nikolai Nahorniak (Elk Grove, Ill.) both won in the Open Singles round of 16 before falling to the eventual finalists. Lee actually won the first game 21-19 over defending champion and top seed Dane Szatkowski but fell 21-17 in the second and 11-8 in the third. Lee and Nahorniak also reached the championship match in Open Doubles but had to settle for a runner-up finish.

Forester players reached the final in each of the other three divisions. Junior Pat Jarvis (Chicago, Ill.) won 21-19, 21-6 over sophomore Riley Kloss (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) in the A Singles semifinals before dropping a 21-14, 11-21, 11-8 decision in the championship match. Lake Forest freshmen Isaac Acosta (Ozone Park, N.Y.) and Derrick Contreras (Des Plaines, Ill.) both defeated teammates to claim divisional titles. Acosta bested sophomore Dan Sterrett (Oak Park, Ill.) 13-21, 21-6, 11-5 in the B Singles final and Contreras also came from behind in a 13-21, 21-7, 11-5 triumph over fellow freshman Clark Creasey (Lexington, Ky.) in C Singles.

A pair of Lake Forest women won a pair of matches in their respective division. Senior Aimee Ulbert (Des Plaines, Ill.) prevailed 21-10, 21-10 in the B Singles round of 16 and 21-15, 21-2 in the quarterfinals a 21-13, 21-11 before falling 21-13, 21-11 to Acosta in the semifinals. Fellow senior Emily Zender (Fishers, Ind.) traveled a similar path in C Singles, winning 21-5, 21-4 in the round of 16 and 21-6, 21-2 in the quarterfinals before being eliminated by a 21-8, 21-18 loss to Contreras.

Senior Brian Connolly (Lemont, Ill.) and sophomore Maria Dugas (Halifax, Nova Scotia) also posted a victory in B Singles before falling in the quarterfinal round.

The Forester men will be back in action January 14-17 at the Illinois Handball Association Single Tournament in Des Plaines.
