Foresters Begin MWC Title Defense by Shutting Out Lawrence on the Road

The Lake Forest College football team opened Midwest Conference play with a 55-0 victory at Lawrence University Saturday night.

The Foresters were dominant in every phase of the game, especially defense. The Vikings managed just 18 yards of total offense on 38 plays and had -22 yards on the ground. Lake Forest recorded a dozen tackles for loss, including a pair of sacks.

Sophomore defensive back Dominic Lewis led the visitors with five tackles, all three of senior linebacker Javan Ah Quin's stops took place behind the line of scrimmage, freshman linebacker Marco Jimenez forced a fumble, and sophomore defensive back Jackson Gehrisch earned his first career interception.

On the other side of the ball the Foresters amassed 394 total yards, including 249 rushing. Eleven players on the team had at least one carry and senior running back Armani Brown ran for two touchdowns and a game-high 86 yards on 12 carries. Senior running back Damon Bonds also scored twice on the ground and freshman George Maroun once. Senior quarterback Tre Stewart ran for another score and completed 10 of 18 passes for 120 yards.

Lake Forest also had the edge in special teams, where senior Doug Antonucci and sophomore Jimmy Lonigro blocked punts and Lonigro recovered his for a touchdown. Freshman kicker Beckham Sonnabend made all seven of his extra point attempts and kicked the first two field goals of his career, once from 27 yards out and the other 37.

The Foresters scored 10 points in the first quarter and led 31-0 at halftime. They added 17 points in the third quarter and seven more in the fourth.

Lake Forest is now 2-0 on the season and will host Knox College next Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
