The Lake Forest College football team dropped a 41-20 decision to visiting Grinnell College on Saturday. Forester junior wide receiver Kevin Davis' seven receptions and 143 yards were career-highs and he scored a pair of long touchdowns.
Grinnell jumped out to a 21-0 advantage on one passing touchdown late in the first quarter and two in the second.
The Foresters closed the gap late in the first half when junior quarterback Geoff Sobey connected with Davis on a 57-yard score. The home team trailed 21-6 at halftime.
Lake Forest opened the third quarter with a 10-play, 59-yard drive that concluded with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Sobey to senior tight end Steven Yena. The drive was kept alive by a 5-yard completion to Davis on 3rd-and-4 and a 23-yard strike to junior wideout Josh Kabala on 3rd-and-19. The extra point trimmed the deficit to 21-13.
Forester junior safety Luke Butts forced and recovered a fumble at the Pioneer 41 on Grinnell's first play from scrimmage. The drive stalled in the red zone, however, and the Pioneers then needed just four plays to cover 81 yards and regain their 15-point lead.
The visitors added a 10-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and a 29-yard passing touchdown with 8:32 to play in the game.
Lake Forest freshman cornerback Ed Dobernig put an end to Grinnell's next possession when he recorded his first career interception.
The final score of the contest came when Davis caught a long pass down the middle from sophomore Pete Scaffidi and outran the Grinnell defenders for a 64-yard score.
Sobey finished the game with 19 completions for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Kabala caught a career-high eight passes for 49 yards and senior tailback Brock Stenberg led the home team with 49 yards on 12 carries.
Senior linebacker Anthony Garetto led the Lake Forest defense with eight tackles and Butts added seven. Junior defensive lineman Kenneth Clady Mason registered 2.5 tackles for loss.
The Foresters fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in Midwest Conference play while the Pioneers raised their record to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the league. Lake Forest will travel to Carroll University next Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff. A live video webast of the game will be available at www.pennatlantic.com.
