Equestrian

The Lake Forest College Equestrian Team caters to all students interested in horses and equestrian sports, regardless of experience.  The team currently practices and competes in hunt seat equitation, however members of all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to join.  The team has 3 levels of membership.  A recreational membership allows students to take weekly lessons, expand their horsemanship skills, and participate in team social events.  A competitive membership allows interested students to take their riding to the next level and compete at intercollegiate horse shows.  A club membership is also available for students that would like to be involved in the team but do not with to take mounted lessons.  The team is proud to train with Millcreek Equestrian in Antioch, IL.  The team is currently led by head coach Serah Vogus and assistant coach Stephanie Lucero.  Serah is a professional rider and trainer based out of Millcreek Farm.  She successfully competes and coaches nationally at all levels from the baby green hunters to Grand Prix jumpers.  Serah furthers her education by participating in clinics with top professionals such as George Morris, Albert Voorn, and Kevin Babington.

Serah was also selected to take part in the prestigious Gladstone Program, a week long intensive training clinic with George Morris.  Serah is passionate about teaching and is dedicated to helping riders reach their goals.  Serah has a passion for the equitation ring and is proud to say that her students have won local medal finals and have even competed at Maclay Finals.  Serah strongly believes in producing well rounded riders who are also educated in the care and management of horses.  She is very excited to share her passion with the riders at Lake Forest College and devoted to helping the team reach its goals.

Participants are responsible for paying for their lessons.  However, Lake Forest College students benefit from an exclusive reduced rate.  The team organizes transportation for weekly lessons on Friday evenings.

The Lake Forest College Equestrian Team is a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association.  The team resides in Zone 7, Region 4 and competes in up to 10 shows per year.  Although participation in horse shows is not required, it is highly recommended because it is such a fun experience and a great way to bond with fellow team members.  Competing through IHSA is an affordable way to gain showing experience as most of the costs are highly offset by the school.

In addition to providing riding opportunities, the team offers a place to expand horsemanship skills.  During weekly meetings, topics relating to riding, showing and horse care are discussed.  The team also provides a great social environment because our season continues throughout the academic year, rather than just a semester.  Several social events are planned throughout the year so that members can get to know one another and build a team environment.  Volunteering opportunities are also offered through Equestrian Connection in Lake Forest, IL.

At the beginning of each semester there is an opportunity for interested students to sign up for any club sport at what is called the Involvement Fair. If a student decides to come to Lake Forest he/she can attend the Fair in the fall and/or spring and sign up for a club sport then. The Fair takes place in or behind Commons, depending on weather, within the first two weeks of classes. First-year students do not need to do anything before arriving at Lake Forest in order to participate in club sports.
