Growing up in Evanston, Illinois, Ken attended Carl Schury High School in Chicago.  He started his college career at Missouri Valley College where he played baseball.

He transferred to Lake Forest in 1949 and went on to earn four varsity letters in basketball.  Most Valuable Player and captain his senior year, Ken, a member of Phi Pi Epsilon, was the recipient of the Emery Free Throw trophy.  He was known for his short outside shots that never seemed to have an arc.  He was also in the Economics Club, the Lettermen's Club and the Men's Glee Club.

Graduating with an economics degree, he married Florence Shomo '51.  He took a position as superintendent at Kewaunee Manufacturers and eventually held the position of sales engineer.  After working at Westlake and Holy Family Hospitals, he became president of Charles E. Shomo & Associates Inc.  Along with being a member of the Westmoreland Country Club and the Suithiod Singing Club, he served his alma mater as class agent from 1958-1996 and sat on the Alumni Board of Governors from 1986-1996.
