Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, Michael attended Detroit Country Day High School.  He earned varsity letter in hockey, baseball and soccer.

He entered Lake Forest in 1969 and went on to earn four varsity letters in hockey. His freshman year he was awarded the Jacob Wardell Edwards Prize for outstanding leadership.  Selected as an All American his junior and senior years, he was also voted the Outstanding Defenseman at the Lake Forest Invitational Tournament in 1972. 

Graduating with a degree in economics, Michael entered the training camp for the New York Islanders NHL team in 1973.  In 1974 he took a position with Owens Corning Fiber Glass Co. as a sales representative and held various marketing and sales management positions.  After 13 years, he left the company to begin his coaching career.  In 1993 he was appointed varsity hockey coach at Winnacunnet High.  In 1996-97, his team won the New Hampshire State Championship.
