Robyn Slater grew up in Granite City, Illinois, and attended Granite City Senior High School, where she competed in tennis, hockey, and softball. The two-time all-conference selection in softball was also a co-captain in tennis and softball and an assistant captain in hockey.

Slater entered Lake Forest College in the fall of 1999 and continued to play all three sports at the collegiate level. She experienced the most individual success in hockey, which became a varsity sport at the College her sophomore year. The forward scored the first goal in team history less than five minutes into the opener and led the Foresters in goals and assists during their inaugural season. Slater also led the team in goals and points as a sophomore and eventually finished her career with 78 points on 50 goals and 28 assists. At the time of her induction, she still ranked third in team history in career goals and fifth in points. The three-time First Team All-Northern Collegiate Hockey Association selection was selected as her team’s captain and Most Valuable Player as a junior and senior. Slater also excelled on the softball diamond, where she set team records for career doubles, home runs, total bases, and runs batted in and, at the time of her induction, still ranked among the program’s top 10 in all four categories. The third baseman was named to the NCAA Regional and National All-Tournament Teams when Lake Forest finished as the national runner-up her junior year. Ten years later, the 2002 Forester softball team became just the second in school history to be inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame as a team. Slater also earned Midwest Conference player of the Year honors while captaining the 2003 squad to a second straight league title. While she did not reach the same level of success in tennis, Slater finished her career with a 23-10 overall record and was voted the Foresters’ Most Improved Player as a senior. Lake Forest hockey, softball, and tennis teams were a combined 169-113-6 during her four years at the College and she earned the Nicholas J. Wasylik Senior Athletic Award.

Slater was also a successful student and earned Academic All-MWC and NCHA All-Academic Team honors each season she was eligible. She was the president of the Gamma Phi Omega sorority and a Senior 25 honoree. She graduated from Lake Forest in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

Slater helped the Forester softball team capture two more conference titles as an assistant coach in 2005 and 2006 and also served as an assistant women’s hockey coach at the College for two seasons. She eventually went on to a career in law enforcement.
