Robert Shaw grew up in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and attended
Arlington Heights High School. He lettered twice in football and
once each in wrestling and track. He was captain of the football
team and his class president.
Shaw enrolled at Lake Forest in the fall of 1980 and helped the football team to a 4-3-1 record his freshman season. He matched the single-season school record for tackles with 109 as a sophomore. He reached double figures in stops in all but one of the team's eight games and he posted a pair of 20-plus tackle performances. Shaw broke the school record with 122 tackles in 1982. He tallied at least a dozen stops in all but one game and finished the season with seven sacks. The team's co-captain was also voted its Most Valuable Player and earned First Team All-Midwest Conference honors. Lake Forest was 7-2 and claimed the MWC title Shaw's senior season. He was once again an all-conference selection after recording 99 tackles, including 9 sacks. He finished his career with more tackles than any Forester before him.
While at Lake Forest, Shaw was also a resident assistant and a member of Brotherhood, a social organization on campus.
After graduating from Lake Forest in 1984, Shaw worked for communications companies and later owned his own screen printing business. He lists his wife, Laura, and children, Emily, Alison, Bobby, and Elizabeth, among his greatest lifetime accomplishments.
