Jon Pratt grew up in Barrington, Illinois, and attended Barrington high school. He played baseball and hockey as a youth, both in high school and in area leagues.

Pratt enrolled at Lake Forest in the fall of 1974 and went on to letter four times in both hockey and baseball. He was the co-captain and Most Valuable Player of the 1977-78 hockey team that finished second in the NCAA Division II National Tournament and was named to the All-NCAA Tournament Team. Pratt was just as successful in baseball, earning All-Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference honors three times and a pair of team MVP awards. He ranked third in the nation with seven home runs and fifth with a .492 batting average and 27 runs batted in as a junior. As a senior he earned second team all-district honors.

Pratt was on the Dean's list all four years and earned the Letterman's Award as a sophomore, junior, and senior. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and earned the Edward H. Oppenheimer Memorial Award, given to the senior who contributed the most to the College community. He also received the Warren A. Peterson Memorial Award, given to outstanding students majoring in economics. In addition, Pratt was a member of Phi Pi Epsilon and served as a head resident for one year.

After graduating from Lake Forest in 1978, Pratt continued his education and received an MBA in finance from Dartmouth College. After working for nearly 13 years in corporate and financial planning, he went back to school, earned an MA in psychology from Naropa University, and began practicing in that field.

Pratt has remained active and competed in various running, cycling, and triathlon events, including the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii
