Bryan Porto grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and went to high
school at American School in Switzerland. He lettered four times in
soccer at American School and was the institution's Athlete of the
Year in 1967.
Porto enrolled at Lake Forest College in the fall of 1967 and made his presence felt early and often for the Forester soccer team. As a freshman he scored 13 goals, at the time the highest total in the program's five-year history. At the time of his induction, Porto held school records for goals in a season (21 in 1968) and both goals (61) and points (142) in a career. He also ranked tied-for-sixth in career assists. He earned All-Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana Collegiate Soccer Conference and All-N.A.I.A. District 20 honors each of his four seasons and was the team captain as a senior in 1970. The Foresters posted an impressive 25-13-4 record during his career. In addition to playing soccer, Porto was also a talented varsity tennis player at the College. He saw time at number one singles during both his sophomore and junior seasons and the team posted a 40-4 record in his four years.
While at Lake Forest, Porto was a member of the Delta Sigma Chi fraternity. He earned his degree in international relations and was fluent in four languages.
After graduating in 1972, he returned to Rio de Janeiro and worked in his homeland for more than two decades. He moved his family to the United States in 1994, an achievement he lists among the greatest in his lifetime. At the time of his induction he was on the Board of Directors of a local youth soccer club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and enjoyed traveling around the world on business.
