Growing up in Lake Forest Illinois, Chester attended Deerfield Shields High School

He entered Lake Forest in 1936 and went on to win three varsity letters in baseball and football.  Chester was an All Conference selection his junior year in football and he was a member of the College's first undefeated, untied football team in 1938. Captain of the baseball team, he posted an errorless season at first base his senior year.  He was also a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and the L.F. Club.

Graduating with an education and history degree, Chester began a professional sports career.  In the early 40s he played for the Kenosha Cardinals, a farm team for the Green Bay Packers.  After his retirement from professional sports, he spent 35 years as a purchasing agent for VR-Wesson Corp., manufacturers of metallurgical cutting tools.

He stayed involved with athletics by coaching senior baseball and hockey teams and by serving on the Recreation Board for the City of Lake Forest.  Active in his community, he and his wife, Vivian were members of the first Fifty-Fifty Club of Lake Forest.  He was also a trustee of the Lake Forest Presbyterian Church.
