Steve Pape is a native of Mundelein, Illinois, and attended Mundelein High School, where he competed in football, wrestling, and track all four years. As a senior he was ranked sixth in the state in wrestling and voted Mundelein’s Athlete of the Year by his peers.

Pape enrolled at Lake Forest College in 1986 and led the football team in sacks each of the next four seasons. The defensive lineman surpassed 50 tackles in each year and finished his career with 237. He also set a program record with 37 sacks, including five in a game against Concordia as a senior and four against Ripon during his sophomore season. Pape was named Honorable Mention All-Midwest Collegiate Athletic Conference as a sophomore before earning First Team All-MCAC North honors following each of his final two years. He was also selected as a team captain before his senior season and, after making a career-high 64 tackles and registering 11 sacks, was voted the Foresters’ Most Valuable Player. At the time of his induction, Pape was still the program’s career leader in sacks by a large margin and, using only his total in that category, ranked sixth in school history in tackles for loss. In addition, his 11 sacks in 1987 and 1989 were tied for the fourth-highest single-season total by a Forester.

While a student on campus, Pape was also a member of the Brotherhood fraternity and competed for the College’s club baseball team. He graduated in 1990 with a degree in business.

He went on to earn a Six Sigma Black Belt Certification and pursued a career in sales.
